NATIONAL MACAROON DAY
National Macaroon Day is celebrated, across the country, each year on May 31. This day commemorates the “macaroon,” a small meringue-like cookie.
Most macaroon recipes typically call for egg whites, sugar and almond paste.
Recipes for macaroons can be found in recipe books dating back to 1725 (Robert Smith’s Court Cookery or the Complete English Cook).The coconut macaroon is most commonly found in the United States. Its main ingredients are egg whites, sugar and shredded dried coconut. Most varieties of coconut macaroons are dipped in milk chocolate, dark chocolate or white chocolate. Almonds, pecans, cashews or other nuts are sometimes added to the cookie.

The Antique Row Collectors Street Faire, this weekend
Fun starts at 8 a.m. so come early, and you never know, who you might run into.

I've been looking for a picture of this Old Steam Locomotive, that use to be across the street from the Brackett Airport.
This train was about half the size of a regular steam locomotive, and the wooden cars where fitted to carry passengers.
I marked the spot with the number 1 as you can see in the picture.
As kid's we use to ride our bikes to Puddingstone Lake, and we came in the back way near the airport.
And every time we would stop and play on the train . This train was complete and with railroad tracks, it was all there.
I hope some day I can find a better picture of the train, back then I heard that they wanted it to go around the lake, but that never took place.
And when they remodel the whole golf course, it was gone, never knew what ever happened to it.
History of Brackett Field

Brackett Field, named after Frank Parkhurst Brackett, one of the original professors at Pomona College who started working at the college in the late 1800s, has a long, celebrated history. In 1911, Calbraith Perry, “C.P.,” Rogers landed his Wright Flyer Biplane nicknamed the “Vin Fiz,” after the carbonated soda produced by the sponsor of the first across the United States flight, near what are now two parallel runways. Brackett Field originally consisted of a dirt strip cut out of a field in the late ‘30s. The original runway was 2,600 feet of dirt and there was a school for student pilots from Pomona College. Later, the Civil Air Patrol, then a paramilitary branch of the U.S. Air Force, used Brackett Field for operations during World War II. In 1957 the county took over the airport and has owned it since that time.[1]
Brackett, located about an hour east of the studios in Hollywood, California, has been used for location filming of scenes for a number of TV series and movies. These include Wings of Fire, Airport 1975, Spencer's Pilots (CBS, 1974–1975) The Tim Conway Show and others.
Actor Kent McCord worked for a Fixed Base Operator on the north side of Brackett in the late 1950s.
The field was also the starting point of the Powder Puff Derby in 1974.
Brackett originally had only one runway (26 / 8), which was paved and had paved taxiways, one on each side. The control tower was built in the late 1960s. In the 1980s, increased traffic (due to the loss of other general aviation airports in the area to urban encroachment) led to the northern taxiway being replaced by a second runway (26R / 8L), which forced the relocation of the control tower a few feet to the north.
Most of the development of the field prior to the 1980s was on the south side, where the Administration Building ("Ad Building") is located. These developments included a Cessna dealership, flying schools and other facilities such as the first metal hangars on the field.
A large, wooden hangar was built on the north side of the field, to house such operations as a Piper dealership and aircraft repair. The hangar burned down circa 1960, was rebuilt, then burned down again about 10 years later, was again rebuilt, then demolished a few years after that to make way for more modern facilities.
Since the 1960s, Brackett has been the home base of Civil Air Patrol (Air Force Auxiliary) Squadron 64

NATIONAL WATER A FLOWER DAY
Celebrated each year on May 30, it is National Water a Flower Day. Some people have a garden full of flowers and will not be able to stop with watering just one flower but that is okay. You can also include you indoor plants and flowers on National Water a Flower Day. Maybe you have a vase with flowers on your desk at work, this is your reminder to give them fresh water today also.
Today is a fun day; a day to enjoy the happiness that flowers bring to people. It is possible that you know someone that is home-bound, hospitalized, needs some cheering up or that you want to say “thank you to” or just to “make someone’s day. If so, then today would be a great day to take them a bouquet of flowers, but remember to “water the flowers” before you deliver them!

NATIONAL HOLE IN MY BUCKET DAY
May 30, of each year, celebrates National Hole in My Bucket Day. This “wacky holiday” is in honor of the fun children’s song “There’s a Hole in My Bucket”.
This song has a nice “catchy” tune and is based on a conversation, between Henry and Liza, about a leaky bucket. It describes a deadlock situation as follows:
“Henry has got a leaky bucket, and Liza tells him to repair it. But to fix the leaky bucket, he needs straw. To cut the straw, he needs a knife. To sharpen the knife, he needs to wet the sharpening stone. To wet the stone, he needs water. However, when Henry asks how to get the water, Liza’s answer is “in a bucket”. It is implied that only one bucket is available — the leaky one, which, if it could carry water, would not need repairing in the first place.” (Wikipedia)

NATIONAL MINT JULEP DAY
National Mint Julep Day is celebrated annually on May 30. Each year, on this day, people around the country join together for a glass of mint julep! This refreshing southern classic is a traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby.
Traditionally a mint julep is made with mint leaf, bourbon, sugar and water. In the Southern states, where mint julep is is more associated with the cuisine, spearmint is the mint of choice. Preparation of the drink may vary from one bartender to another.
- It is believed that the mint julep originated in the southern United States sometime during the 18th century.
- The term “julep” is generally defined as a sweet drink, particularly one used as a vehicle for medicine.
- During the 19th century Americans also enjoyed gin-based juleps.
- Each year almost 120,000 mint juleps are served at Churchill Downs over the two-day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.
- May, 2008 – Churchill Downs unveiled the world’s largest mint julep glass. ( 6-foot tall)

Eat and play games at the College of Agriculture student club booths or head over to our popular Insect Fair featuring nearly 500,000 live and preserved insects (runs from 9am-5pm). We also have a corn maze, petting zoo, horse rides, entertainment, and lots of activities for kids! If you like pancakes, we've got them. Join us for our pancake breakfast Saturday morning only from 8am-11am. Bring your appetite!

Beginning March 31, 2014 you can ride the Angels Express from L.A. Union Station or Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo to all Angels weekday home games starting at 7:05 p.m. on the Orange County Line. For Friday night home games at 7:05 p.m., there is train service from Riverside on the Inland Empire-Orange County line.
Ride to and from Angel Stadium for a very special price - only $7 roundtrip, $6 for senior/disabled, $4 for youth (ages 6 – 18), and free for children 5 and under with a paying adult (up to 3 children). The train takes you straight to the stadium's parking lot so you're just a short walk away. Save money on parking and gas, forget about the crowded stadium parking lot, and leave your car behind! This train service is a joint demonstration project made possible in part by the Clean Transportation Funding from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC).

L.A. Union Station:
Daily parking is available in front of Union Station at Lot B. There are 60 spaces available, with a maximum charge of $14 per day. Overnight parking is not allowed. Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs Station:
To park at this station, you need to purchase a Single Day Parking Permit in advance online; the permit costs $5.00 per day. With this permit, you will be able park your vehicle on the east side of the train tracks so that you will have access to your vehicle after the game. Connections to Metrolink stations
Orange County Stations:
OCTA bus routes 29, 43, 54, 59, 70, 83, 90 and 143 provide late service to some of the Metrolink stations in Orange County.
Los Angeles Stations:
The Metro Red Line is subway that goes from North Hollywood to L.A. Union Station. The Metro Gold Line also serves L.A. Union Station, starting in Pasadena.
When planning your trip riding the Angels Express, remember to make sure your bus or light rail route provides service at the time you will be returning to the Metrolink station. The Angels Express train departs 30 minutes after the last out. Assuming that a normal game takes three hours, the train would likely depart around 10:35 p.m., getting you back to your connection between 10:45 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., depending on how far you are going.
NOTE: There is a possibility that the game could run long, making the train departure times unpredictable, so be sure to have a backup plan in case the train arrives after your last bus or light rail train has left.

MAY 29, 2014 – NATIONAL PAPER CLIP DAY – NATIONAL COQ AU VIN DAY
NATIONAL PAPER CLIP DAY
Yes, even the paperclip has it’s own day of honor. National Paperclip Day is celebrated each year on May 29. Today is about that well-known piece of curved wire that keeps our papers together and helps keep us organized.
However there are much earlier claims to invention of the paperclip, according to the Early Office Museum, the first patent for a “bent wire paper clip” was presented to Samuel B. Fay in the United States in 1867. The original intention of Fay’s clip was to attach tickets to fabric, however the patent recognized that it could also be used to attach papers together.
Along with Fay’s patent, there were as many as 50 others that received patents for similar designs prior to 1899. One other notable name receiving a patent for his paperclip design in the United States was Erlman J. Wright in 1877. At that time, his clip was advertised for use in fastening newspapers.
The Gem paper clip, which was most likely in production in Britain in the early 1870′s by “The Gem Manufacturing Company” , was never patented. It is the most common type of wire paper clip and is still in use today. It was introduced to the United States around 1892 and in 1904, Cushman & Denison registered a trademark for the “Gem” name in connection with paper clips. Paperclips are still sometimes called “Gem clips”.
Today, paperclips come in various sizes, shapes and colors and can make your paperwork look more fun and lively.
Paperclips are not just for holding papers together, there are many other things that you can do with them!

NATIONAL COQ AU VIN DAY
Annually celebrated on May 29, it is National Coq au Vin Day. Coq au vin is French braise of chicken, cooked with wine, lardons (salt pork), mushrooms and garlic.
Coq au vin is a French staple that literally translates to “rooster with wine.” It’s a rustic, peasant-style dish that is easy to serve when entertaining because a lot of the work can be done in advance.
Different legends tell of coq au vin back in the days of Gaul and Julius Caesar however the first documented recipe was in the early 20th century. There was a somewhat similar recipe, poulet au vin blanc, that appeared in an 1864 cookbook.

Update on Pomona Heritage Annual Summer
BBQ & Picnic, Sunday June 8 at Lincoln Park
Join your fellow Pomona Heritage members and neighbors for a fun afternoon in the Park. PH will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages. Member's name A-K please bring a favorite desert, L-Z a picnic side dish( both enough for 12).
