California snowpack above normal but unclear if it will solve drought

The water content of the Sierra Nevada snowpack was measured at above normal levels Wednesday when officials took the winter's first manual survey - but the effect on the drought remains unclear.

The water content was 136 percent of normal, according to the survey conducted by the California Department of Water Resources.

The latest snow level is a good sign, "but that's it - it's a start," said Frank Gehrke, chief of the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program.

Gehrke plunged a measuring pole into a thick field of snow in the Central Sierra, which includes Lake Tahoe.

His survey followed an electronic measurement last week that put the water content of the snowpack at approximately 11 percent above average. Even more snow has fallen since then.

The snowpack provides about 30 percent of California's water supply when it melts and rushes through rivers and streams to fill reservoirs that remain critically low.

So, despite the higher than average snowpack measurement, officials say surveys during the remainder of the winter will indicate whether the snowpack's runoff will be sufficient to replenish California's reservoirs by this summer.

Gehrke said snow must continue falling through April for him to feel confident the drought is easing.

Last Jan. 1, the snowpack was a meager 45 percent of the historical average. On April 1, it had dropped to a record low of 5 percent.

A brewing El Nino system - a warming in the Pacific Ocean that alters weather worldwide - is expected to impact California and the rest of the nation in the coming months, according to a NASA report released Tuesday.

Its effects on California's drought are hard to predict, but experts say it should bring some relief.

Forecasters expect a light to moderate storm system in Northern California early next week.

NEW YEAR’S EVE

Also known as Old Year’s Day or Saint Sylvester’s Day, New Year’s Eve is celebrated annually on December 31st.

As we count down the last hours and seconds of the old year it is a good time to look back at the year and reminisce with friends and family.
In Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries it is tradition to eat 12 grapes during the count down to midnight symbolizing hopes for the new year. Around the world, eating anything in the form of a circle or ring symbolizes coming full circle and is considered good luck.
As a Christian observance, it is traditional to hold an evening Mass the night before a Holy Day. New Year’s Day in the Roman Catholic Church honors the Virgin Mary. In some countries St. Sylvester, pope of the Catholic Church from 314 to 335, is celebrated on New Year’s Eve.

John Fassbinder (1931 – 2014)

John Fassbinder's pottery is notable for its sensitive color and exquisite design. His interest in painting has made his ceramic work elegantly distinctive in that it is at once totally utilitarian and esthetically commanding. Curated by Claremont Heritage Director, David Shearer, the exhibition Earth + Sky will feature ceramics and paintings from over four decades of work. A number of pieces will also be available for sale.
...
John Fassbinder was born on August 6, 1931 in Washington State to Mark and Martha Fassbinder. He earned his bachelor’s degree in art at the University of Washington in Seattle where he studied with Robert Sperry and Paul Bonifas, pioneers in the American Studio Craft movement.

During the Korean War, he served as an electrical technician, stationed in Germany. In 1958, he married Gretchen Day, who he met while attending UW. The couple would welcome two children, Sam and Molly, in the coming years.
Mr. Fassbinder earned his MFA in ceramics at Claremont Graduate School in 1960. He taught at Central Washington College and then, in 1963, was hired as an art instructor at Chouinard Art School. There, he taught ceramics, drawing and painting and served as assistant chairman of the ceramics department.
Next, Mr. Fassbinder was hired at Pomona College where he taught for 11 years. His courses included ceramics and drawing and, later, the college’s first computer graphics classes. He also taught at Scripps College and was a part-time faculty member at Citrus Community College for several years.

Mr. Fassbinder was also a working artist. Known for his beautiful and original ceramics, he rented a studio on Baseline Road in Claremont. Working with traditional materials and techniques, he fashioned works of art that were elegantly distinctive and utilitarian. He found inspiration in nature.
He turned out a never-ending array of housewares like vases, jugs, goblets, plates and pitchers, all imprinted with his signature. He favored vivid glazes and decorations both abstract and figurative. A prime example of his work—a stoneware platter emblazoned with a fiery iron-oxide sun rising over a cobalt-glazed ocean—is represented in the permanent collection of the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona.

Bill Cosby charged with sexually assaulting woman in 2004

Bill Cosby was charged Wednesday with sexually assaulting a woman at his home 12 years ago - the first criminal charges brought against the comedian out of the torrent of allegations that destroyed his good-guy image as America's Dad.

WATCH LIVE: Prosecutor announces charges against Bill Cosby in 2004 case

The case sets the stage for perhaps the biggest Hollywood celebrity trial of the mobile-all-the-time era and could send the 78-year-old Cosby to prison in the twilight of his life and barrier-breaking career.

In bringing the case, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman overruled her predecessor, who declined to charge Cosby in 2005 when Temple University employee Andrea Constand first told police that the comic drugged her and violated her by putting his hands down her pants at his mansion in suburban Philadelphia.

Cosby was charged with aggravated indecent assault and was to be arraigned in the afternoon.

The TV star acknowledged under oath a decade ago that he had sexual contact with Constand but said it was consensual.

The charges were announced just days before the 12-year statute of limitations for bringing charges was set to run out.

Prosecutors reopened the case over the summer as damaging testimony was unsealed in Constand's related civil lawsuit against Cosby and as dozens of other women came forward with similar accusations that made a mockery of his image as the wise and understanding Dr. Cliff Huxtable from TV's "The Cosby Show."

Many of those alleged assaults date back decades, and the statute of limitations for bringing charges has expired in nearly every case.

Constand, who is now 42 and works as a massage therapist in her native Canada, is ready to face Cosby in court, her attorney, Dolores Troiani, said this fall.

"She's a very strong lady," Troiani said. "She'll do whatever they request of her."

The charges add to the towering list of legal problems facing the actor, including defamation and sex-abuse lawsuits filed in Boston, Los Angeles and Pennsylvania.

Cosby in 1965 became the first black actor to land a leading role in a network drama, "I Spy," and he went on to earn three straight Emmys. Over the next three decades, the Philadelphia-born comic created TV's animated "Fat Albert" and the top-rated "Cosby Show," the 1980s sitcom celebrated as groundbreaking television for its depiction of a warm and loving family headed by two black professionals - one a lawyer, the other a doctor.

He was a fatherly figure off camera as well, serving as a public moralist and public scold, urging young people to pull up their saggy pants and start acting responsibly.

Constand, who worked for the women's basketball team at Temple, where Cosby was a trustee and proud alumnus, said she was assaulted after going to his home in January 2004 for some career advice.

Then-District Attorney Bruce Castor declined to charge Cosby, saying at the time that both the TV star and his accuser could be portrayed in "a less than flattering light." This year, Castor said the allegations in Constand's lawsuit were more serious than the account she gave police, and if that information had been known at the time, "we might have been able to make a case."

Castor tried to make a comeback as district attorney in the November election but lost to Ferman's top deputy.

After the criminal case went nowhere, Constand settled her lawsuit against Cosby in 2006 on confidential terms.

Her allegations and similar ones from other women in the years that followed did not receive wide attention but exploded into view in late 2014, first online, then in the wider media, after comedian Hannibal Buress mocked Cosby as a hypocrite and called him a rapist during a standup routine. That opened the floodgates on even more allegations.

Women mostly from the world of modeling, acting or other entertainment fields came forward and described being offered a drink by Cosby and waking up to find they had apparently been sexually assaulted. Cosby, through his representatives, accused some of the women of trying to extract money from him or get ahead in show business.

Earlier this year, The Associated Press persuaded a judge to unseal documents from the Constand lawsuit, and they showed the long-married Cosby acknowledging a string of affairs and sexual encounters.

Cosby testified that he obtained quaaludes in the 1970s to give to women he wanted to have sex with. He denied giving women drugs without their knowledge and said he had used the now-banned sedative "the same as a person would say, 'Have a drink.'"

In the deposition, Cosby said he put his hands down Constand's pants that night and fondled her, taking her silence as a green light. Constand maintains she was semi-conscious after he gave her pills he said would relax her.

"I don't hear her say anything. And I don't feel her say anything. And so I continue and I go into the area that is somewhere between permission and rejection. I am not stopped," Cosby testified.

He said Constand was not upset when she left that night. She went to police a year later.

Her lawyer has said Constand is gay and was dating a woman around the time she met Cosby in the early 2000s.

The AP generally does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they agree to have their names published, as Constand has done.

Laurie Levenson, a criminal law professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, said Cosby no longer enjoys the celebrity appeal that might sway a jury.

"His reputation has already been tarnished, so I doubt that jurors would be inclined to believe him just because of his prior image," she said in September. She said the judge in the case will have to decide whether to allow other accusers to testify or whether that would be too prejudicial.

Metrolink: No more hoverboards aboard trains after Monday

Beginning Monday, hoverboards and other self-balancing electronic devices will not be permitted aboard Metrolink trains, officials with the Southern California commuter railroad said Tuesday.
“This is a proactive step we’ve taken to ensure the safety of our passengers,” Metrolink spokeswoman Sherita Coffelt told City News Service. “There have been concerns voiced about these devices catching fire and blowing up, and until there are more studies done, we’re not going to allow them on the trains.”
Coffelt said that Metrolink executives made the decision to bar hoverboards last week following informal discussions. The matter has not been addressed by the agency’s Board of Directors, she said.

According to Coffelt, there have been no reported injury accidents involving hoverboards and other self-levitating products on Metrolink trains or at its 55 stations.
“We just felt it was prudent to take this action now to prevent anything from happening,” she told CNS.
Hoverboards function like skateboards but operate using electromagnets, rotors and other advanced technology.
Coffelt said that if passengers board trains with their boards, Metrolink personnel will ask them to step off. The devices will not be seized, however.

“They may not be able to ride,” the Metrolink spokeswoman said. “We’ll try to work with them and give them the option of returning to take another train.”

December 30, 2015 – BACON DAY – FALLING NEEDLES FAMILY FEST DAY – NATIONAL BICARBONATE OF SODA DAY

Bacon Day December 30

                                                  BACON DAY

Bacon Day is observed annually on December 30th.
Everything is better with bacon. Someone said that once. Within our research, we have found very little to dispute this assertion.
In the United States and Canada, bacon is made from the pork belly. Elsewhere in the world, the side and back cuts of pork are used. The meat is cured in either a salt brine or in a salt pack. It is then either dried, boiled or smoked.
Bacon is a very popular food in the USA.  You can find many items also flavored or scented with bacon including popcorn, soap, candles, air fresheners and many more.

NATIONAL BICARBONATE OF SODA DAY

National Bicarbonate of Soda Day or Baking Soda day is observed annually each year on December 30th.
According to Almanac.com, here are a few of the many uses for baking soda:
  • Add baking soda to your bath water to relieve sunburned or itchy skin.
  • Make a paste of baking soda and water, and apply to a burn or an insect bite for relief.
  • Clean your refrigerator with a solution of one-teaspoon baking soda to one quart of warm water.
  • Pour a cup of baking soda into the opening of your clogged drain and then add a cup of hot vinegar. After a few minutes, flush the drain with a quart of boiling water.
  • To remove perspiration stains, make a thick paste of baking soda and water. Rub paste into the stain, let it sit for an hour, and then launder as usual.
  • If you crave sweets, rinse your mouth with one-teaspoon baking soda dissolved in a glass of warm water. Don’t swallow the mixture; spit it out. Your craving should disappear instantly.
  • Add a pinch of baking soda to boiled syrup to prevent it from crystallizing.
  • To remove pesticides, dirt, and wax from fresh fruits and vegetables, wash them in a large bowl of cool water to which you’ve added two to three tablespoons of baking soda.
  • Soak toothbrushes in baking soda and warm water overnight to clean bristles.
  • Gasoline and oil odors can be removed by putting clothes in a trash bag with baking soda for a few days before washing them.
  • Lay down barrier of baking soda under sink-pipe openings and along basement windows to keep carpenter ants, silverfish, and roaches from invading. Roaches eat the baking soda, dehydrate, and die.
  • A light baking soda paste on a damp cloth will remove bugs and tar from cars without damaging the paint. Let paste sit for a few minutes before wiping and rinsing clean.
  • To remove stains from your coffee and tea cups, wipe them with a damp sponge dipped in baking soda paste.
  • Keep your rubber gloves dry and smelling good by sprinkling baking soda inside them. They’ll slip on more easily too!
  • Sprinkling baking soda on your front steps will provide traction and melt the ice. Unlike rock salt, kitty litter, or sand, it won’t damage outdoor or indoor surfaces or shoes.
  • Boil two inches of water in a pan with a burned bottom, turn off the heat, then add half a cup of baking soda. Let it sit overnight. In the morning it will be easy to clean.
  • Sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda on the bottom of your toaster oven to eliminate the burned smell from drippings and crumbs.
  • A paste of baking soda removes red sauce stains from plastic.
