October is Pedestrian Safety Month: Be Predictable, Look Out for One Another

Pomona, Calif. – As part of Pedestrian Safety Month, the Pomona Police Department is participating in community-oriented initiatives throughout October to raise awareness about the safety of pedestrians.

Pedestrians are more and more at risk on the road. Based on data from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), 2020 had the largest ever annual increase, 21 percent, in the rate at which drivers struck and killed pedestrians. In California, pedestrian deaths accounted for 27 percent of all traffic-related deaths in 2019. Another report from GHSA found an overrepresentation in pedestrian deaths of people of color killed in crashes, a disparity that has gotten worse.

“Many people in the community get around by walking,” Pomona Police Department, Corporal Thomas De La Vega said. “If you’re driving, please slow down and stop for those attempting to cross the street. If you’re on a walk, be predictable for vehicles. We should all be looking out for one another.”

Pomona Police Department offers actions for drivers and pedestrians to keep everyone in the community safe, including staying off the phone when behind the wheel or walking:
            Pedestrians

  • Be predictable. Use crosswalks.
  • Take notice of approaching vehicles and practice due care.
  • Do not walk or run into the path of a vehicle. No vehicle can stop instantly. At 30 m.p.h., a diver needs at least 90 feet to stop.
  • Be visible. Make it easy for drivers to see you – wear light colors, reflective material and carry a flashlight, particularly at dawn, dusk or at night.
  • Be extra careful crossing streets or entering crosswalks at night when it is harder to see, or when crossing busier streets with more lanes and higher speed limits.
Drivers
  • Follow the speed limit and slow down at intersections. Be prepared to stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
  • Avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
  • Never drive impaired.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

English Español CommunityPomona 5k/10k event will involve street closures from 6:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday October 16th, 2021

The 5th Annual Pomona 5k/10k event is this Saturday, October 16th.  The event will commence around 8:00 AM and conclude around 11:00 AM; however, the event will cause several streets within the downtown Pomona area to be closed prior to and during the 5k/10k run.  Street closures will begin at 6:30 AM and continue until the conclusion of the event.

The biggest detour will affect northbound and southbound traffic on Garey Av between Mission Blvd and Monterey St. Please plan alternate routes to avoid unnecessary delays. Refer to the attached page for affected streets.

The Pomona Police Department wants community members to be aware of a phone scam that is currently active in the Pomona area.

Officers have received reports from community members who stated that callers contact them claiming to be members of a police department or sheriff's department. The law enforcement impersonator often times:

🔺refers to the community member by name,
* tells the community member the call is being recorded, and
🔺tells the community member they missed a court appearance or jury duty.
The caller states they need to send money or a warrant will be issued for their arrest or they may turn themselves in to jail.
Sometimes scams such as these will include spoofing a legitimate police agency phone number and using a real name of a law enforcement officer in an attempt to gain the trust of the victim. No government agency of any kind takes gift cards as payment.
If you receive a similar call, hang up without providing any information or taking any instructions from the caller. Contact your local law enforcement agency.
The Pomona Police Department reminds you to be aware that:
🔺 The Pomona Police Department does not call individuals and demand or request money from community members under any circumstances.
🔺 The Pomona Police Department or any other legitimate law enforcement agency does not call community members seeking payment for outstanding traffic citations or warrants.
🔺 There’s never a good reason to send cash or pay with a gift card. Scammers will often ask you to pay in a way that makes it hard for you to get your money back — by wiring money, putting money on a gift card, prepaid card or cash reload card, or using a money transfer app. Anyone who asks you to pay that way is a scammer.
🔺 Individuals claiming to collect debts may try to instill fear in potential victims to persuade them to forward money.
