The accident occurred around 9 a.m. on the southbound 71 Freeway at Old Pomona Road, the California Highway Patrol said.
According to officials, the big rig crossed the center line and collided with the vehicles, trapping some passengers inside their cars.
Both directions of the freeway, just north of the 60 Freeway, were shut down as a result.
Three people were injured critically with a least one person suffering major head injuries, officials said.Two people were taken by helicopter to County-USC Medical Center. An ambulance transported a third patient, reportedly a child, to UC Irvine Medical Center, the CHP said.
The cause of the crash is unknown.
A SigAlert was expected to be lifted around 11 a.m.
