The crash was reported around 2:45 a.m. just east of Towne Avenue, California Highway Patrol Officer Anthony Martin said.
Antonio Sanchez, 62, died at the scene, according to coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. Sanchez was from Upland, according to the CHP.
Sterling Cross, 50, of Upland, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the CHP.
According to the preliminary investigation, Cross was driving a 2003 Infiniti G35 at about 65 mph in the No. 2 lane when the vehicle collided with a 2009 Smart Car driven by Sanchez, according to the CHP.
After the collision, Cross drove the Infiniti onto the right freeway shoulder, and the Smart Car stopped in the No. 1 lane "with no lights or hazard lights activated," the CHP reported.
The Smart Car was then rear-ended by a 1996 Toyota Camry that was going about 65-68 mph in the No. 1 lane, the CHP reported. The Toyota driver, 55-year- old James Laurence of Fontana, was taken to a hospital for treatment of "moderate" injuries, according to the CHP. Laurence was not arrested.
The eastbound freeway lanes were closed while an investigation was conducted. All lanes were reopened about 6:25 a.m., the CHP reported.
