Assemblywoman Norma Torres, San Bernardino County Auditor-Controller Larry Walker and former Downey City Council candidate Gabriel Orozco have opened committees to run in the special election for the Inland area’s 32nd Senate District.
Torres and Walker, both Democrats, have previously declared their candidacies. Orozco also is a Democrat. The primary election is March 12 and the special election is May 12.
Whoever wins May 12 will serve out the remainder of Negrete McLeod’s four-year term in a Pomona-to-San Bernardino district crafted in 2001. They will run for re-election in the redrawn 20th Senate District, which closely resembles the 32nd.
Downey, in Los Angeles County, is well to the west of the old 32nd. Downey, though, is in the new 32nd Senate District that will take effect in 2014.
We’ve reached out to Orozco to see if he actually intends to run for the former Negrete McLeod seat. Here is his statement of intent.
