The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is a wondrous and beautiful display of nature and historical site. Do not be surprised if a peacock walks up to greet you in the parking lot or if one comes by to stare at the waterfall with you. Visitors will see plant-life from all over the world, many of which is rare or endangered. The Los Angeles Arboretum has around 9,000-10,000 different plants, mostly Mediterranean climate and semi-tropical climate plants. Also displayed are a number of outdoor historical exhibits such as the Queen Anne Cottage, the Coach Barn and the Hugo Reid Adobe Historical Landmark of 1839. The Arboretum houses a library with many books on plants and gardening as well as a cafe and gift shop. The grounds are divided into five botanical sections: Africa, Australia, The Americas, The Asiatic, and the Historic Circle. There are also two ponds where ducks, geese and other waterfowl may be seen. Visitors may do self-guided tours, attend guided tours (by appointment) or ride on a tram to see and enjoy the Arboretum. In the summer, the Arboretum hosts concerts and has many other events and lectures throughout the year. The Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation operate it. At the exit gate, do not be surprised if a guinea hen squeezes through the fence to walk you back to the parking lot as a perfect end to an amazing experience.
