California Highway Patrol investigators are asking the public to help them identify a person who fled from the scene of a May 3 crash on Interstate 10 in Fontana.
Officers are searching for a driver who bailed out of a silver Chevrolet Pick-up truck after slamming into the back of a white Ford Focus, killing 66-year-old Gloria Diaz of Long Beach, said Sgt. Veda Fleeton, with the CHP’s Rancho Cucamonga office.
The crash was part of a larger scene that Patch reported on Friday.
It all started with a separate crash just after 9 p.m. Witness called 9-1-1 to report a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on the eastbound I-10 at Cedar Avenue. Michael Hampton, 50, of Montclair, had been struck and died at the scene, San Bernardino County Coroner’s officials said.
According to online CHP reports that night someone, possibly Hampton, had tried to run from the center divider to the right shoulder.
That first crash forced the closure of the some I-10 lanes. While Diaz and other motorists slowed, the driver of the Chevy truck did not stop in time as it approached east of Cherry Avenue, in Fontana, Fleeton said.
“The silver Chevy pick up truck ran into the back of the white Ford focus,” Sgt. Fleeton said. “The impact caused the Ford to spin out of control.”
Authorities ask anyone with information on the driver to call the Rancho Cucamonga CHP office at (909) 980-3994.
