Larry Gordon was just doing his regular job July 12 at the city of Walnut Gymnasium/Teen center, where he serves as a recreation leader, when an emergency pushed him into the ranks of heroes.
Gordon saw a resident collapse on the basketball court and determined the person was in cardiac arrest.
He rushed to the building's automatic external defibrillator -- while a bystander began CPR -- and used it to administer a shock, reviving the person, according to city officials.
When paramedics arrived, the person was conscious and sitting up, city information officer Fabiola Huerta reported.
Medics took the patron to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he was discharged three days later.
At Wednesday's Walnut City Council meeting, Gordon and his staff received commendations and certificates.
Emergency personnel commented that if not for the quick actions of Gordon and the bystander before they arrived, the patron would not have survived his cardiac arrest, Huerta wrote in a news release.
Mayor Antonio “Tony” Cartagena said, “I am proud that Larry is part of the Walnut family, and his heroic deed shows how important CPR/AED and first aid training is for all of us.”
Gordon received a commendation from the City Council as well as certificates from Senator Bob Huff, Assemblyman Curt Hagman, and Supervisor Gloria Molina’s office.
