Vancouver, Canada entrepreneur Mike Hallatt opened Pirate Joe's, a store that sells Trader Joe's merchandise.
A Vancouver, Canada businessman with a penchant for Trader Joe's products is facing a lawsuit from the Monrovia-based specialty market chain, the Los Angeles Times reported.
With Trader Joe's merchandise in demand but the company yet to open a store in his neck of the woods, entrepreneur Mike Hallatt decided to take matters into his own hands by opening a store called Pirate Joe's.
His booty? Trader Joe's peanut butter pretzels, almond butter, and other goodies in demand in Canada, the newspaper reported. Hallatt would drive across the border to Washington to shop and then sell what he bought in his Pirate Joe's store at an increased price.
That didn't sit well with Trader Joe's. The company is suing Hallatt, alleging unfair business practices and trademark infringement, in an effort to get the shop shuttered, according to the Times.
"The only way this is going to end is if Trader Joe's opens in Vancouver," Hallatt told the newspaper. "I would love that. They would put me out of business, but I'd love that. I love their stuff."
