Nine 'Super Jumbo Jet' Gates To Open At LAX Next Week
By City News Service
A long-awaited wing of boarding gates at the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX will open for business Sept. 18.
The nine boarding gates can accommodate double-decker "super jumbo" jets such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747-800.
The terminal improvements, part of a $1.9 billion overhaul of Tom Bradley International Terminal, also includes a new 150,000 square foot mall-like pavilion named after former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa that features high-end dining, retail and lounges.
Most of the 30 airlines now at Tom Bradley International Terminal will be using the new gates by next week, according to airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles.
Once all of the airlines have changed over to the new gates, the old gates will be torn down and the second phase of the project -- to build another nine gates on the east side of the terminal -- will begin. That project is expected to be completed in 2015.
Mayor Eric Garcetti is scheduled to join airport officials for a ribbon- cutting.
