Victim in 210 Freeway Bus Crash Files Negligence Lawsuit
One of more than 50 passengers injured when when a tour bus brushed against a car and overturned on the side of the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Irwindale last month filed a negligence suit today.
Lai Ha Lam brought the case in Los Angeles Superior Court. The complaint names Da Zhen International Inc., the owners of the bus; Van Hool, the vehicle's designer and manufacturer; and Jinquan Yang, the driver.
"Yang lost control of the (bus) due to his excessive speed and subsequently overturned after Yang's unsafe lane change," the suit states.
Lam suffered fractures of her face and jaw as well as shock to her body, according to the complaint. She is seeking unspecified compensatory damages against all three defendants and punitive damages from Van Hool.
A representative for Da Zhen could not be immediately reached.
The bus rolled over about 10 a.m. Aug. 22 near Irwindale Avenue east of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway. At least 10 ambulances responded to the scene, along with at least three medical helicopters to carry patients to area hospitals.
All lanes of the freeway were temporarily closed to accommodate medical helicopters. About 11 a.m., however, all westbound lanes were reopened, along with the eastbound carpool lane.
Most of the injuries involved cuts and bruises and some fractures, according to fire and hospital officials. The victims were primarily older adults, believed to be between roughly 60 and 80 years old. Many of the injured did not speak English.
The bus was heading for the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in Highland.
