Massive East Coast Winter Storm Cancels, Delays Flights at LAX

Dozens of flights out of LAX have been canceled as of Thursday afternoon on the one of busiest travel days of the year.
A massive winter storm battering the East Coast and Midwest resulted in the cancellations of dozens of flights at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded or scrambling for alternate transportation.
As of mid-afternoon Thursday, 43 departing flights had been canceled at LAX, along with six arriving flights, according to airport spokeswoman Mary Grady.
Passengers were advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport.
The delays came on one of the busiest travel days of the year, with thousands of people looking to return home after the holidays. As many as 200,000 people were expected to pass through LAX Thursday, according to the airport.
The winter storm, dubbed "Hercules," grounded hundreds of flights in cities including New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. Thousands more were delayed.
The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings for Long Island, northeastern and southern Massachusetts, New Hampshire, southern Maine and Cape Cod. More than a foot of snow fell in some areas near Chicago, according to the NWS.
