               NATIONAL ANTHEM DAY

Written by Francis Scott Key, the Star Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States of America.  On National Anthem Day, we celebrate and honor this song.

By a congressional resolution, signed by President Herbert Hoover, The Star Spangled Banner officially became  the national anthem of the United States of America on March 3rd, 1931.

The Star Spangled Banner was written during the War of 1812.   After watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry from a ship,  the next morning seeing the American flag still flying over the Fort, Francis Scott Key was inspired that on September 14, 1814, he wrote what is now our national anthem.
In September of 1914, during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812, while being held on a ship, Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry .  The following morning, upon seeing the American flag still flying over the Fort, he was inspired to write a poem, which was titled, “Defence of Fort M’Henry”.  This poem was later set to music and renamed “The Star Spangled Banner”.

NATIONAL I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY DAY

Celebrated annually on March 3rd, it is National I Want You To Be Happy Day.  This day was created as a day that encourages us to do something to make others happy.
Share a smile, share a laugh, pay a compliment, buy someone’s coffee, send some flowers, take someone to lunch,  make cookies for a neighbor, play games with the kids,  take the family to the park, visit a friend or maybe make a phone call.   These are just a few of the many things that can be done to brighten up the day for someone.  It can actually be as simple as just telling someone that you want them to be happy.

             NATIONAL COLD CUTS DAY 

         

March 3rd celebrates a food holiday, it is National Cold Cuts Day.  A popular sandwich filling, of a variety of sliced, precooked meats, that can be purchased at the deli counter or from vacuumed sealed packages.
Cold cuts are also referred to as lunch meats, luncheon meats, sandwich meats, sliced meats, cold meats and deli meats.

One that we all remember from our childhood days, is from the television commercial: b – o – l – o – g – n – a.  

A  few of the favorites at deli counters are pastrami, roast beef, turkey and ham.  Cold cuts are well known on the submarine sandwich and have become popular in many appetizer recipes.

NATIONAL MULLED WINE DAY

National  Mulled Wine Day is celebrated annually on March 3rd.
Today is a day, for those 21 years and older,  to warm up from the winter chill with a nice glass of mulled wine.  Mulled wine is a beverage usually made with red wine along with various spices and raisins. It is served, and enjoyed, hot or warm.
There are various recipe combinations for making Mulled Wine.

Mulled spirits (that is, wine and liquors that are heated and spiced) have long been considered a balm against illness in the winter months.
