NATIONAL ANTHEM DAY
Written by Francis Scott Key, the Star Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States of America. On National Anthem Day, we celebrate and honor this song.
By a congressional resolution, signed by President Herbert Hoover, The Star Spangled Banner officially became the national anthem of the United States of America on March 3rd, 1931.
The Star Spangled Banner was written during the War of 1812. After watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry from a ship, the next morning seeing the American flag still flying over the Fort, Francis Scott Key was inspired that on September 14, 1814, he wrote what is now our national anthem. In September of 1914, during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812, while being held on a ship, Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry . The following morning, upon seeing the American flag still flying over the Fort, he was inspired to write a poem, which was titled, “Defence of Fort M’Henry”. This poem was later set to music and renamed “The Star Spangled Banner”.
