NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK DAY
April 26, 2014 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Hopes to Remove a Third of a Million Pounds of Expired Prescription Drugs from Circulation on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day April 26.
“APR 21 (WASHINGTON) –After collecting more than 1,700 tons of expired, unwanted prescription medications over the past three-and-a-half years, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and more than 4,200 national, tribal, and community law enforcement partners will hold another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 26th. Americans can take their pills to one of over 5,600 collection sites across the country between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. local time. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
The public has embraced the opportunity these Take-Back Day events provide to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs. Last October Americans turned in 324 tons (over 647,000 pounds) of prescription drugs. Since DEA’s first event in September 2010, the public has surrendered over 3.4 million pounds of pills.”
As per the Drug Enforcement Administration, a public health and safety concern is created when unused medications are left in a home. These unused medications become highly susceptible to accidental ingestion, misuse, abuse and theft.

NATIONAL RICHTER SCALE DAY

NATIONAL PRETZEL DAY
National Pretzel Day is celebrated annually on April 26. A bag of nice crunchy, salty pretzels or a big, warm, soft, cinnamon pretzel is the question of the day. Either one is a great choice.
There are a few different accounts in the origin of the pretzel. Most people agree that it does have a Christian background and they were invented by the monks. According to The History of Science and Technology, in 610 AD, “an Italian monk invents pretzels as a reward to children who learn their prayers. He calls the strips of baked dough, folded to resemble arms crossing the chest, “pretiola” (little rewards)”
Another source puts the invention in a monastery in southern France. The looped pretzel may also be related to a Greek Ring bread from the communion bread used in monasteries a thousand years ago. In the Catholic Church, pretzels had a religious significance for both ingredients and shape. The loops in pretzel may have served a practical purpose: bakers could hang them on sticks, projecting upwards from a central column, as shown in Job Berckheyde’s (1681) painting.
The Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants introduced pretzels to North America in the 19th century. At this time many handmade pretzel bakeries populated central Pennsylvania and their popularity quickly spread.
It was in the 20th century that soft pretzels were very popular in areas such as Philadelphia, Chicago and New York.
- Today, the average Philadelphian consumes about twelve times as many pretzels as the national average.
- Pennsylvania is the center of American pretzel production for both hard and soft pretzels, producing 80% of the nation’s pretzels.
- The annual United States pretzel industry is worth over $550 million.
- The average American consumes about 1.5 pounds of pretzels per year.
- Philadelphia opened a privately run “Pretzel Museum” in 1993.
- Hard pretzels originated in the United States in 1850.
NATIONAL PRETZEL DAY HISTORY National Pretzel Day, an “unofficial” national holiday began In 2003 when Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell declared April 26 “National Pretzel Day” to acknowledge the importance of the pretzel to the state’s history and economy.

NATIONAL MARGERY DAY
The registrar of National Day Calendar has designated April 26, 2014 as National Margery Day.
This day celebrates Margery’s 12th Birthday.
This day celebrates Margery’s 12th Birthday.
When Margery’s brother, Ben, started to learn to read, their Mother sent him notes in his school lunchbox. Inspired by a friend, the notes became new vocabulary words complete with definitions. She continued the tradition when Margery (now 12 yrs old), had first started to read. Margery once confided that she was not enjoying the notes of vocabulary words with definitions. For a few days after that, her Mother sent notes with messages including, “I love you.”, “I’m proud of you.” and “Have a great day.” She quickly ran out of new maxims for her little girl.
That is when with a web search, she found the National Calendar Day website. She started sending Margery’s lunch box notes with the National “holiday” of that day. When it was something fun like National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, she would include a chocolate chip cookie in her lunch. She was happy and excited when she learned that Margery often shared the National Day designations from the lunch box notes with her school friends, the lunch aides and even her teachers.
She also sent Margery letters and postcards when she was away at sleep-away camp last summer, and was sure to include a listing of upcoming dates and the National “holidays” that would be celebrated.
It seems fitting that Margery get her own National Day.
