NATIONAL METEOR DAY
Every year, June 30 celebrates National Meteor Day, also known to some as National Meteor Watch Day. On this day, people across the country search the skies hoping to find meteors streaking across their view.
Daily there are millions of meteors that occur in the
Earth’s atmosphere.
“A meteor or “shooting star” is the visible streak of light from a meteoroid or micrometeoroid, heated and glowing from entering the Earth’s atmosphere, as it sheds glowing material in its wake.” (Wikipedia)Earth’s atmosphere.
The majority of the meteoriods that cause meteors are only the size of a pebble.
Meteors sometimes occur in showers.
Meteors are usually observed at night and are visible when they are about 34 to 70 miles above the Earth and they usually disintegrated at about 31 to 51 miles above. There glow time is normally about a second.
A very small percent of meteoroids hit the Earth’s atmosphere and then pass out again.
The chemical composition and the speed of the meteoroid will cause different hues to the light. Possible colors and elements producing them include:- Orange/yellow (sodium)
- Yellow (iron)
- Blue/green (copper)
- Purple (potassium)
- Red (silicate)

Obama Returning to Los Angeles in July
On July 23, he'll speak at a Democratic National Committee fundraising reception and dinner at the home of television producer Shonda Rhimes.
President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit the Los Angeles area July 23 to speak at a Democratic National Committee fundraising reception and dinner at the home of television producer Shonda Rhimes.
Tickets for the event begin at $1,000, according to an invitation posted on the website, PoliticalPartyTime.org, which tracks political fundraisers.
The price is $10,000 to attend the reception and for the opportunity to have a photo taken with Obama, and $32,400 -- the maximum allowable contribution to a national party committee in a calendar year -- to be a co- host of the event, which also allows the donor to attend a dinner with Obama in addition to the reception and the photo opportunity.
The event's co-chairs include Kerry Washington, the star of the Rhimes- produced ABC drama "Scandal."
The trip will be Obama's 19th to Los Angeles or Orange counties since taking office in 2009 and the third in three months. All but three of his trips have included political fundraisers. He has made 10 trips to the region solely for fundraising.
Rhimes is also a producer of two other ABC dramas, "Grey's Anatomy" and "How to Get Away with Murder," which will debut this fall.
Obama is also scheduled to speak at a fundraiser in Los Altos Hills in Silicon Valley earlier on July 23.

NATIONAL CAMERA DAY
Each year on June 29, it is National Camera Day, celebrating the camera, its invention and photographs.
The camera is an irreplaceable tool used to record and replicate memories, events, people and places. Before the invention of the camera, the only resource to document a vision was a painting. As there are not many people who can perfectly replicate something into a painting, the power of a camera provided many people with a simple, inexpensive and fast solution.
George Eastman, also called “The Father of Photography”, is credited for the popularity of the camera. While he did not invent the camera, he did invent many additions that improved it’s use, ease and production, making it widely available to homes around the world.
The original camera was large and bulky, but has now evolved into something that can be as smaller than a pen. The many features and variations of cameras today make them appealing for personal and professional use.
To celebrate National Camera Day, find something, someplace or someone who you enjoy, snap a picture and cherish the memory.

Usually consisting of two hinged metal plates that are molded to create the honeycomb pattern found on waffles, the waffle iron is heated and then dough is poured or placed between the plates which are then closed to bake the waffle.
It was around the 14th century that the earliest waffle irons originated in the Low Countries. They were constructed of two hinged iron plates connected to two long wooden handles. Traditionally these waffle irons were held over an open flame or set on a stove. The iron plates were made to imprint elaborate patterns on the waffle. Some of these patterns included, coat of arms, landscapes and religious symbols.
American Cornelius Swarthout patented the first U.S. waffle iron in 1869. Sitting atop a wood or gas stove, this waffle iron had cast iron plates joined by a hinge that swiveled in a cast iron collar. It was in 1911 that General Electric produced a prototype electric waffle iron beginning production in 1918.
Oregon track coach and Nike Co-founder Bill Bowerman, used his wife’s waffle iron in 1971 to experiment his idea of using waffle-ironed rubber to create a sole for footwear that would grip and still be lightweight. His inspiration led to the introduction of the so-call “Moon Shoe” in 1972. Further refinement of Bowerman’s design resulted in the “Waffle Trainer” in 1974, which then helped to fuel the growth of Blue Ribbon Sports/Nike.
Waffle iron makers today offer a large variety of choices from waffle irons that make very thin waffles to those that can make waffle cones.

NATIONAL ALMOND BUTTERCRUNCH DAY
National Almond Buttercrunch Day is celebrated annually on June 29th. The crunchy candy, sometimes called just buttercrunch, was made famous in World War II. A buttercrunch candy called Almond Roca, made by Brown and Haley, was shipped overseas, in tins, to U.S. troops.
Invented in 1912 by Harry Brown and J.C. Haley, Almond Roca’s name is said to have been inspired by a local librarian who, to describe the hard, log-sharped confection, chose the Spanish word “roca”, in English meaning “rock”.
Sugar, almonds, butter, palm oil, palm kernel oil, cocoa powder, whey, skim milk powder, soya lecithin, chocolate and vanilla are the ingredients found in Almond Roca. Company tradition has a small amount of the original 1923 batch of toffee carried over into each subsequent batch of candy.

Hollywood Museum Exhibit to Feature Laurel & Hardy, Our Gang
A retrospective on Hal Roach Studios, including memorabilia from the Laurel & Hardy and Our Gang franchises, will open at the Hollywood Museum July 5.
The exhibit, "100 Years of Hal Roach Studios: Laurel & Hardy, Our Gang and Harold Lloyd," which will run through Aug. 31, will open on the heels of the International Laurel & Hardy Society's national convention and include a wealth of photos, costumes and props dating to the early 1900s.
Costumes from the 1945 Laurel & Hardy movie "The Bull Fighters" will be display, along with coats worn in "Jitterbugs" (1943), the iconic Fez worn in "Sons of the Desert" (1933), among numerous other pieces of memorabilia such as posters, scripts, sheet music, scrapbooks, personal photos and letters.
The retrospective also covers silent film star Harold Lloyd and the Our Gang kids known as The Little Rascals. The studio also was home to bombshell actress Thelma Todd, Zasu Pitts and Charley Chase. Other performers who graduated from Roach comedies on their path to stardom included Jean Harlow, Janet Gaynor, Jean Arthur, Fay Wray, Paulette Goddard and Boris Karloff.
"We are so pleased to honor the 100th anniversary of the Hal Roach Studios with this special exhibit," museum head Donelle Dadigan said.
The Laurel & Hardy Society, also known as Sons of the Desert, is co- sponsoring the exhibit.

NATIONAL PAUL BUNYAN DAY
Each year on June 28, National Paul Bunyan day is celebrated across the country. It is suggested that on this day, everyone take some time and read one of the Paul Bunyan original tales.Described as a giant and a lumberjack of unusual skill, Paul Bunyan is one of the most famous North American folklore heroes. In the tales, Paul Bunyan was almost always accompanied by his companion, Babe the Blue Ox.
First appearing in print in 1906, in a story published by Northern Michigan journalist James MacGillivray, Bunyan’s character originated in folktales circulated among lumberjacks in the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. One account states that the tales began during the Papineau Rebellion of 1837. In 1914, the stories were reworked by William Laughead, for a logging company’s advertising campaign, and found a new widespread popularity. It was the 1922 edition of Laughead’s tales that inspired many others and soon the character was widely known across all of the United States and Canada.
The Paul Bunyan legend tells that it took five storks to carry him as a newborn and as he was a little older and clapped and laughed, it broke windows. The legend continues that he sawed off the legs of his parents’ bed, in the middle of the night, when he was only seven months old and that the Grand Canyon was formed as he and Babe the Blue Ox walked through dragging his axe behind him. The myth of the Great Lakes being formed by Bunyan needing to create a watering hole for Babe to drink from is another popular one told by many.
Many cities in the north-central section of the United States, claim the title as ” the official home of Paul Bunyan”.

Los Angeles area gas prices rise 3.1 cents in a week to average of $4.16
LOS ANGELES - The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County rose today for the third consecutive day, increasing nine-tenths of a cent to $4.162.
The average price is 3.1 cents more than one week ago, 1.2 cents higher than one month ago and 5.2 cents greater than one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.
The Orange County average price rose for the seventh consecutive day, increasing eight-tenths of a cent to $4.152. It is 4.2 cents more than one week ago, 1.6 cents higher than one month ago and 6.2 cents greater than one year ago.
“Two Southern California refineries have reported partial unplanned shutdowns because of equipment issues and that has driven wholesale prices up by 20 cents in the last week,” said Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
“While we can’t predict how fast or how much they will increase, we do expect pump prices to continue rising as travelers get ready for their Independence Day getaways, so drivers might not want to wait until the last minute to get fuel.”
Pomona Concert Band to open summer season
POMONA - The Pomona Concert Band will launch its 67th annual Summer Concert Series on Thursday at the G. Stanton Selby Bandshell, behind the Community Center building in Ganesha Park, 1575 N. White Ave., Pomona.
This series, sponsored by the city, will include nine free Thursday evening concerts at 8 p.m. with the finale on Aug. 28 plus two bonus concerts.
The opening concert, “American Pageant,” will feature music by American composers and arrangers and is directed by conductor Linda Taylor and assistant conductor Jorge Garcia. Edmond Fry will be the master of ceremonies for the evening that will include “Fantasy on Early American Tunes” and “Highlights from Camelot.”
The upcoming concerts:
• The second concert on July 10 has the unusual theme of “Retro, Sept. 5, 1974” performing the same music the band performed back in 1974, which includes selections from “The Music Man.” .
• The first bonus concert Twill be with the Claremont Symphony Orchestra on July 13, starting at 6:30 p.m.. There will have an Instrument Petting Zoo where children can try out instruments starting at 6 p.m.
• On July 17, the band will present “Artist Pallet in Music” directed by Garcia and MC’d by Rev. Larry Hintz. This concert will be music with titles related to color and art such as scenes from ‘The Louvre’” and “The Purple Carnival March.”
• On July 24, the concert theme will be “U.K. Favorites” and will be directed by Taylor and Garcia featuring “Scottish Rhapsody” and the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. This concert will be sponsored by the Pomona Host Lions Club. The Lions will be at every concert this summer to collect used glasses, hearing aids and canned food for their hunger projects.
• On July 31, the band will be led by guest conductor James Christensen, a well-known conductor, composer, arranger, adjudicator and clinician, who will bring many of his best band arrangements to life. During his 37 years with Walt Disney Productions, he produced music familiar to patrons of the Disney theme parks and movies.
• On Aug. 7 and 14. the concerts will display that “PCB’s Got Talent.” These concerts will feature many of the regular band members conducting the band on pieces they chose. It will feature clarinet section leader James Lytthans, trombonist Kerry Kline, Brent Decker who plays euphonium, trumpeters Douglas Mckenna, Christopher Northrop and Miyoshi Feliciano, and David Schaafsma from the tuba section.
• On Aug. 21, the band will present “Bark In The Park” and invite the concert goers to bring their canine friends to enjoy the evening, on a leash, of course. Taylor will conduct the concert MC’d by Pomona Unified School District board member Jason Rothman. This program is dedicated to the PUSD and all of the students past and present who help make PCB a success.
• The second of special bonus concerts will be Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. hosting the Golden State British Brass Band at the Selby Band Shell. Conductor Jack Hollander will take the brass band through a wide variety of British band music along with many American favorites.
• The final summer concert will be Aug. 28 celebrating “American Visions” with a concert that features music that is patriotic or has a title that displays real Americana, including “Shenandoah,” “Buffalo Bill’s Centennial” and John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The MC for the evening will be Councilman John Nolte.
All performances are free. Attendees should bring a lawn chair and perhaps a picnic basket to each concert.

the month of July will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project.
Yanks Air Museum celebrates the 4th of July all month long.
For the month of July, the aircraft museum will donate $1.00 of each basic admission ticket and $2.00 of each VIP admission ticket purchased at the museum to the Wounded Warriors Project. The veterans’ organization has helped empower and honor injured military service members and assist their families since 2011. Thanks to the Wounded Warrior Project’s efforts, our military heroes returning from current conflicts are better supported than ever before. The non-profit family oriented aviation museum at Chino Airport in Chino, CA., owns a collection of nearly 200 historic airplanes.
A long-time supporter of military and civilian aviation, the Yanks Air Museum collection is considered one of the most prominent in the world. Included is a WWI Curtiss Jenny – the first mass produced aircraft with interchangeable parts. Constructed of wood and fabric, the Jenny was the basic Army trainer for American and Canadian pilots in World War I. It was also used to track Pancho Villa from the air in 1916 throughout his rampage in Mexico. A model plane collection and an “insider’s” peak at the restoration workshops of the museum are also offered. June 27 of each year celebrates National Sunglasses Day. Celebrate this day with summer’s most popular fashion accessory.- The word “cheaters” is an American slang word for glasses. In the early twentieth century, sunglasses were sometimes known as sun cheaters.
- As a way to protect yourself from several serious eye problems that can be caused by ultraviolet radiation and blue light, healthcare professionals recommend eye protection whenever the sun comes out.
- Stemming from a desire to mask their identities, sunglasses have long been associated with celebrities.
- It was in the 1940′s that sunglasses, especially on the beach, really became a fashion accessory.
- In 12th century China, sunglasses were made with flat panes of smoky quartz.
- Sam Foster introduced inexpensive mass-produced sunglasses to America in 1929, selling them under the name Foster Grant.
- An article in a 1938 Life magazine reports that sunglasses were a “new fad for wear on city streets…”, stating that “20 million sunglasses were sold in the United States in 1937, of which only about 25% Americans needed them to protect their eyes.
- Polarized sunglasses became available in 1936.
- Dark lenses do not automatically filter out more harmful UV radiation and blue light than light lenses.
- Inadequate dark lenses can be harmful as they provoke the pupil to open wider resulting in more unfiltered radiation entering the eye.
- A 1995 study reported that “Expensive brands and polarizing sunglasses do not guarantee optimal UVA protection.”
- Sunglasses that are sold in the United States are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and are required to conform to safety standards.

June 27 of each year celebrates National HIV Testing Day (NHTD). This day has been set aside as a day for people of all ages to “Take the Test, Take Control.” In the United States, there are nearly 1.1 million people that are living with this and almost one in five do not know that they are infected with HIV. Getting the test is the first step to find out if you have HIV. If you were to test positive, there are steps that you can take to live a longer and healthier life and to help stop the spread of HIV to others. These steps include getting medical care, HIV education and taking the proper medications regularly. On National HIV Testing Day, there are testing sites open and mobile testing units set up throughout the United States. I have this box of old Progress Bulletin Newspapers that date back to 1935.
But this one dates back to 1985, I thought I would share this one with you all. The old firehouse is still there, it's been vacant for years.
Walking home from Lincoln School, I would stop and talk to the firemen there, when it was the fire station.
But I never stopped there when it was a restaurant, hmm wondering if I missed anything.

Back in the early 1960's I use to go with my older brother, where he would meet some friends.
They would bowl a few games, and I would sit and cheer my brother on.
This use to be located on the northwest corner of Monterey Ave. and Main St.
It was just down the street, from where the old "Pomona Public Library" use to be.
The building is gone now, but if you look close enough, when you walk or drive by, the sidewalk entrance is still there.
A brick wall surrounds area, where the bowling alley use to sit.

Back then it was a open air market, where they could load and unload
their products.
