NATIONAL DOUGHNUT DAY
Millions of people across the nation, anxiously await to celebrate National Doughnut Day each year on June 6. This day celebrates the doughnut and honors the Salvation Army “Lassies;” the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army “lassies” were sent to the front lines of Europe. Home cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.
The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.”
On this day, many doughnut stores in the United States offer free doughnuts to their customers.

NATIONAL GARDENING EXERCISE DAY
National Gardening Exercise Day is celebrated each year on June 6.
Gardening is not only rewarding, it is also therapeutic and a good source of exercise. Today’s holiday is all about celebrating the benefits of exercise that one gets as they garden. There is walking involved as you go to and from your garden and sometimes, back and forth to the garden shed to get a rake or your gloves or maybe a drink of water. Another way to get lots of walking in is when you mow your garden area (that is if you use a push mower and not a riding mower!) There is also bending down and standing up which is sometimes done many repetitive times in a row as weeds are pulled. The arm muscles are being used when one is shoveling dirt, spading or raking as well as pruning. These are just some of the examples of how gardening and exercising go hand-in-hand.
The vitamin D which we receive from the sunshine is also an added benefit.
Today to celebrate National Gardening Exercise Day, get outside, enjoy your day in the garden and reap the benefits!!

NATIONAL YO-YO DAY
June 6 annually celebrates a very fun holiday; it is National Yo-Yo Day. This day celebrates an historic toy.Today is the perfect day to get out your yo-yo’s and have some fun playing “Sleeper”, “Walk the Dog”, “Shooting the Moon”, “Around the World” or “Hop the Fence”.
The yo-yo is an object that consists of an axle connected to two disks, and a length of string looped around the axle. It is played by holding the free end of the string, allowing gravity or the force of a throw to spin the yo-yo and unwind the string, then allowing the yo-yo to wind itself back again. This is called “yo-yoing”.
It is believed that the yo-yo was first invented in ancient Greece. There is a Greek vase painting, from 500 BC, that shows a boy playing with a yo-yo.
The yo-yo was made popular in America when Donald F. Duncan Sr. manufactured the “Duncan Yo-Yo” in the early 1900′s. The name “Yo-Yo” was first registered as a trademark in 1932.
In 1999, the Duncan Yo-Yo was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong in Rochester, New York.
The National Yo-Yo Museum is located in Chico, California. http://museum.nationalyoyo.org/
Yo-yo’s are enjoyed by people of all ages.

Do you remember? Maybe you spent many nights with your friends, watching movies at the drive-in theater.

National Drive-in Movie Day.
National Drive-in Movie Day.
A large outdoor movie screen, a projection booth, a concession stand and a large parking area set with speakers for automobiles is what makes up a drive-in theater. People (of all ages) are able to watch the movies from the privacy of their own cars.
The original sound at the drive-in movies could be heard from speakers that were on the screen. It was later when they were on individual speakers hung from the car windows which was then followed by broadcasting over AM or FM car radio.Chemical company magnate Richard M. Hollingshead Jr. of Camden, New Jersey was the creator of the drive-in theater. Hollingshead’s drive-in opened in New Jersey on June 6, 1933.
At this first drive-in theater, the screen was 4o ft by 50 ft and there were 400 car slots. The advertising slogan used was, “The whole family is welcome, regardless of how noisy the children are”. An Adolphe Meniou film, Wife Beware, was the first film shown.
The drive-in theater idea caught on quickly and drive-ins began to
pop up in other areas.

The drive-in hosted a full service restaurant with roof top seating, a trolley system to take children and adults to the playground and a large indoor theater in case of bad weather. The drive-in movie began it’s popularity decline due to the invention of color television, VCRs and video rentals along with the increase in land values and the widespread adoption of daylight saving time.
