Senate Committee to Vote on Bill that Could Remove Guns from 'People in Crisis'
The bill was drafted in the wake of the UCSB massacre in May.
The Senate Public Safety Committee will vote Tuesday, June 24, on a bill authored by Assemblymembers Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) and Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), introduced in the wake of the Isla Vista shooting last month, which would allow for the temporary removal of firearms from individuals who are at risk for committing acts of violence.
AB 1014 would allow a judge to issue a “Gun Violence Restraining Order” to temporarily limit an individual’s access to firearms when there are warning signs or indications that the person is in crisis.
Similar legal tools are available in Connecticut, Indiana and Texas. The parents of the disturbed young man in Isla Vista desperately tried but failed to get help before their son’s killing spree last month, providing a tragic example of how options are limited for families in crisis.
