Starting in his early teens, George began working and building a life for himself. He worked in his ...father’s shipyard learning the craft of shipbuilding, earned his ship’s engineer certificate, commanded his own tug boat, obtained business experience working in his uncle’s insurance office in Toronto, got married, had two of this three sons, and began a career designing lake ships, including the S.S. Geneva which was featured in an 1876 issue of Scientific American due to its phenomenal speed, all before he began his adventures on land in California in 1880.
