21 injured after Metro train crashes into car near USC campus

Twenty-one people were injured after a Metro train crashed into a car at the intersection of Exposition Boulevard and Vermont Avenue Saturday.

The driver of a silver Hyundai was attempting to make a left turn at the intersection when the car collided with the eastbound train.

Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to the scene at 10:50 a.m. Two train cars were derailed during the crash. Authorities said 21 people are injured. Eight patients suffering minor injuries and one person in grave condition were transported to a nearby hospital.

One person listed in critical condition had to be extracted from the Hyundai. Paramedics transported the person to a hospital.

A command center has been set up with the multiple agencies investigating the scene, including the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department. Metro officials requested buses to take passengers between the Vermont and 23rd Street station on the rail line.
