NATIONAL JOHNNY APPLESEED DAY
March 11th, we celebrate National Johnny Appleseed Day. This is the day that we honor the legend of Johnny Appleseed and his kind, generous and interesting life that we have learned of.
”John Chapman (September 26, 1774 – March 18, 1845) was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, including the northern counties of present day West Virginia.” (Wikipedia)
Johnny was a settler that followed the movement and traveled west. As Johnny Appleseed traveled, he planted apple trees along the way. He would tell stories to the children and spread The New Church gospel to the adults, receiving a floor to sleep on for the night. Johnny Appleseed also had a great love for animals. Because of his kindness, his generous ways, his leadership in conservation and the symbolic importance he attributed to apples, he became an American legend while he was still alive.
Johnny Appleseed Day is celebrated on either March 11th or September 26th. The September date is Appleseed’s acknowledged birthdate. whereas the March date is sometimes preferred because it is during planting season. There is also some controversy and vagueness concerning the date of Appleseed’s death and his burial.
National Johnny Appleseed Day is celebrated in many elementary schools across the country.

NATIONAL OATMEAL NUT WAFFLES DAY
National Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day is celebrated each year on March 11th. A day to celebrate a healthier version of the classic waffle. Whole grain oats and chopped nuts mixed into a waffle recipe is a delicious, healthy way to start your morning.A waffle is a batter-based or dough-based cake cooked in a waffle iron patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. There are many variations based on the type of iron and recipe used.
”It’s in the late 14th century that the first known waffle recipe is penned in an anonymous manuscript, Le Ménagier de Paris, written by a husband as a set of instructions to his young wife. While it technically contains four recipes, all are a variation of the first: Beat some eggs in a bowl, season with salt and add wine. Toss in some flour, and mix. Then fill, little by little, two irons at a time with as much of the paste as a slice of cheese is large. Then close the iron and cook both sides. If the dough does not detach easily from the iron, coat it first with a piece of cloth that has been soaked in oil or grease.” (Wikipedia)
