Murder suspect pled guilty to 2011 Homicide



On January 4, 2011, a drive by shooting occurred in the 600 block of Illinois Street in the City of Pomona. A 31 year old female (victim Lina Romero) was shot in the back. She was taken to USC Medical Center where she later died as a result of her injuries. Pomona Police Department Homicide Detective's launched a murder investigation. Homicide detectives quickly identified two gang members as the suspects. The first suspect, Andrew “bullet” Alvarez was apprehended within a week of the murder. Andrew pled guilty during the early stages of his court proceedings and received 27 years in state prison.
The second suspect, Ruben “Rascal” Vargas fled to Mexico where he remained on the run. On December 13, 2014, the US Marshal’s Fugitive Apprehension Team located and detained Vargas in Mexico. Vargas was later extradited from Mexico to Pomona for the 2011 homicide of Lina Romero.
On 3/10/2015, Vargas pled guilty before his jury trial and received 31 years in state prison.
