National Postal Worker Day is observed annually on July 1st.  This is a day to appreciate and thank the numerous men and women that work consistently and diligently to help us send and receive all of our mail and packages.  These employees suffer some of the harshest working conditions, yet continue to persevere six days a week.

Across the United States, postal workers walk an average of 4 to 8 miles carrying a full load of letters and packages and delivering them in a timely manner to each one of our doorsteps.  Postal workers have to work rain or shine, or should we say rain or snow or sleet or hail or thunderstorms or blizzards or immense heat and/or any combination of the above.

Take an extra minute to say thank you to your postal worker and let them know how much they are appreciated.  A simple thank you, maybe a gift or even a handshake will brighten the day of the postal worker who works so hard for you.

NATIONAL GINGERSNAP DAY

Mmmmmm, hungry?  Celebrate July 1st, National Gingersnap Day, by enjoying this sweet and savory treat. Gingersnaps are cookies typically made from molasses, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and brown sugar.  They are a combination of sweet and spicy and have long been enjoyed by many.
Gingersnaps are a healthier alternative to other cookies, being that they are generally low in calories and have many benefits.  The ginger that is in these cookies has anti-inflammatory properties, is known to help treat nausea and fight heart disease and other illnesses.
The American version of the gingersnap is a little more like a sugar cookie, while other versions, such as the Scandinavian one, is a small, thin cookie.
To enjoy this national holiday, you could make a batch yourself and savor a nice treat while knowing that you are getting some health benefits at the same time!  Here is just one gingersnap recipe you can try.

The history of the gingersnap goes back for centuries.  Ginger dates back to the middle ages and gingersnaps have long been created in Germany and England.  The original creator of National Gingersnap Day, an “unofficial” holiday, could not be located.

National U.S. Postage Stamp Day – July 1

NATIONAL U.S. POSTAGE STAMP DAY

We can celebrate National U.S. Postage Stamp Day by appreciating the ease and simplicity with which we can send and receive mail.  Because of the invention of the postage stamp, we can simply pay a standard rate to purchase a “symbol” that we can attach to our letter and send it with no responsibility to our recipient.
Before the postage stamp, the cost of sending a letter/package was actually given to the recipient.  The postal worker would take the letter and deliver it to the desired destination and would only then, collect the money for the postage.  Because of this, there were times that the recipient would refuse the letter, leaving the cost to the postal service.  The postal service had to set aside an allotted amount of money for this, and took it as a loss.
The postage stamp completely reinvented this whole process, leading to a simpler, smoother and more cost-effective system of sending and delivering mail.

National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day – July 1

NATIONAL CREATIVE ICE CREAM FLAVORS DAY

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!  July 1st celebrates National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day, a day to ponder over, or taste, the many creative, awkward or just plain silly different types of ice cream flavors. It is meant for more than the love of the traditional vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream.
Celebrate by venturing out to your local ice creamery and testing their many concoctions, or head down to the grocery store and get creative with finding different ingredients to make your own!  You can also try to find some crazy flavors yourself!  Here are just a few we came across – mashed potato ice cream, beer ice cream, olive oil ice cream, buffalo wing ice cream, goat cheese ice cream and candied bacon ice cream.  Willing to try one?  :)
