Sept. 20, 2015 – WIFE APPRECIATION DAY – NATIONAL PUNCH DAY

                                      WIFE APPRECIATION DAY

Wife Appreciation Day is observed annually on the third Sunday in September.
Since wives do so many things to make their husbands and homes happy, this is a day for men to let their wives know just how much they appreciate both the little and the big things they do all year long.
OBSERVE
Some popular ways to observe Wife Appreciation Day are with a gift of flowers, perfume, jewelry or clothing.  A day at a spa, tickets to a show and dinner at a nice restaurant are also nice ways to show appreciation.  A foot massage and cooking breakfast or dinner at home can also be a very nice way to say, “Thank you for all the things you do every day.  I appreciate them.” Use #WifeAppreciationDay to post on social media.
HISTORY
While the history of Wife Appreciation Day is somewhat obscure, it seems the idea originally was born to honor the women who, while they are married, do not have children.  Wife Appreciation Day is a way to make up for Mother’s Day since they do not qualify for that holiday.

NATIONAL PUNCH DAY

National Punch Day is observed each year on September 20.  Even though some may think today is about using the tool for making a project or throwing a few punches into your punching bag, we choose to go in the direction of quenching our thirst and making a delicious and refreshing drink as National Punch Day is listed under the list of  American Food Holidays.
Punch is used as a name for a wide assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, usually containing fruit or fruit juice.  Punch is often found served at parties, weddings and other large gatherings and is frequently served in large, wide bowls, known as punch bowls.
Punch was believed to have been introduced, by sailors, to England via India in the early seventeenth century.   Punch grew quickly in popularity and was soon spread to other countries.
The word punch is a loanword from Hindi panch (meaning five).  The drink was originally made with five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water and tea or spices.  The original drink was named paantsch.
Soft drink manufacturers today distribute many types of “fruit punch” beverages.  Typically they are red in color and despite the name, they only contain a small fraction of actual fruit juice with the major constituents being sugar or corn syrup, citric acid and artificial flavors.
