NATIONAL WILDLIFE DAY

National Wildlife Day is observed annually on September 4th.  Take a trip down to your local zoo and celebrate!  Wild animals are fascinating and amazing creatures that we can appreciate and learn from.  National Wildlife Day is about two important things: raising awareness for endangered animals and appreciating U.S. zoos, sanctuaries, farms, etc. for helping to preserve our wildlife.
CELEBRATE
As you go on with your day today, take note of the different animals that you see.  Even if they are domesticated, take a minute to think about where they came from and what they would be like in the wild.  Understand that each species on our planet serves a purpose and should be cared for and protected just as we would our own pets!

HISTORY
Colleen Paige, author and founder of the Animal Miracle Foundation & Network, created National Wildlife day.  She did so not only for the purposes listed above, but to honor the late Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter).  She wanted to keep up the legacy of having a passion and appreciation for the many wild, and some unfamiliar, creatures that we share this planet with.

NATIONAL MACADAMIA NUT DAY

National Macadamia Nut Day is observed annually on September 4th.  Macadamia nuts, with their rich, buttery taste, are known by most to be one of the most delectable of all nuts. They originated in Australia and are named after physician and chemist, John Macadam, who encouraged the cultivation of the nuts in Australia.
Macadamia nuts are grown on trees resembling large evergreens and grow to 30 to 40 ft. high.  Although they are native to Australia, most of today’s world supply is grown in Hawaii.  They were first commercially grown there in 1921. A few other places, such as Indonesia, South Africa, Central America and California also cultivate some of these tasty nuts.
Macadamia nuts are delicious when eaten raw and also when used in baked goods…..especially cookies! They are also known for their health benefits.  To name a few: rich source of energy, high in dietary fiber, gluten-free, high in mono-unsaturated fat, excellent source of minerals and contain many important B-complex vitamins.
CELEBRATE
So whether you want to indulge in a treat or reap some health benefits, celebrate by mixing up a batch of your own Macadamia Nut cookies! Use #MacadamiaNutDay to post on social media.

NATIONAL NEWSPAPER CARRIER DAY

National Newspaper Carrier Day is observed annually on September 4th.  Barney Flaherty was the first newspaper carrier, hired in 1833 by Benjamin Day, publisher of the New York Sun.  National Newspaper Carrier Day is a observance meant to appreciate all of our newspaper deliverers and the convenience they provide to us and also to remember Barney Flaherty.
There is a Newspaper Carrier Hall of Fame, started in 1960, created to acknowledge some famous newspaper carriers in our nation’s history.  Included in the Newspaper Carrier Hall of Fame are Martin Luther King Jr., Warren Buffet and John Wayne.
CELEBRATE
It would be a great day to show your newspaper carrier a little extra appreciation.  A box of chocolates, a card or a simple “thank you” would make their day a little brighter.  Enjoy the ease that we have in being able to wake up, get our coffee and have a paper to read before getting out of our pajamas!  Use #NewspaperCarrierDay to post on social media.
