Did you know?

On the afternoon of November 14, 1915, the Liberty Bell made a very brief stop here in Ontario – which was quite a remarkable event, considering that the plan for the stop was made at the last minute. The Liberty Bell was making its way across the US from San Francisco, and several cities across the country were vying to be one of the stops along the way. Ontario tried but was not chosen and in fa...ct, the iconic bell was only scheduled to stop in Pomona and Colton along the Southern Pacific Railroad line. However, the day before the Liberty Bell was scheduled to roll through Ontario on its way east, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce made one last ditch effort and succeeded – the infamous bell would make a slow roll into Ontario, stop for five minutes in the afternoon, and slowly roll out of town. But by the time this decision was made, the Ontario Daily Report had already gone to press, so getting the word out about the stop was a feat in itself considering that 100 years ago there was no such thing as Twitter or Facebook, and most people didn’t even have a home telephone! But thanks to good old word of mouth, quite a crowd turned out to see the bell. This 1915 event marked the last time the Liberty Bell made any cross-country journeys. To see the Liberty Bell today, you’ll have to make the journey to its home at Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia
