Pomona Police Arrest Man Armed With A Knife, Who Held A Female Victim Against Her Will. Assault With A Deadly Weapon Charges Filed.

CRIME: Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Domestic Violence, & Resisting Arrest
VICTIM: Confidential
SUSPECT: Robert Allen Shirley DOB 04/18/1983, Pomona Resident
UNIT: Patrol Division
NARRATIVE:
Pomona Police Officers responded early Sunday afternoon to a man with at knife call in the 200 Block of Canfield, in Pomona Ca. As a police supervisor and officers arrived on scene they observed a male suspect, later identified as Robert Allen Shirley, who was armed with a knife. The knife was tied to Shirley’s hand, while he forcefully held the female victim around the neck. There was an elderly man trying to help the victim however, his attempts to free her were not successful.

Officers immediately gave commands to the suspect to drop the knife however, he refused. When the suspect failed to comply to drop the weapon, a "less lethal” bean bag shotgun was used by officers to take control of the suspect. This caused the suspect to let go of the female. The suspect continued to disobey orders and was struck again with the "less lethal" bean bag rounds before going to the ground. Once he was on the ground, officers were able to subdue him and untie the knife from his hand.

During the incident the suspect was heard to be making statements to the officers to shoot him. Fortunately, officers were able to take the man into custody safely with the use of the less lethal use of force method. The female victim was not injured during the incident.

The above charges of assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, and resisting arrest were filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office on Tuesday. The suspect remains in custody, pending trial.
