National Arbor Day - Last Friday in April

NATIONAL ARBOR DAY

National Arbor Day is observed each year on the last Friday in April.  Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees.
Trees provide vital protection for the Earth’s topsoil from erosion, oxygen, and homes for wildlife.
They also are a renewable resource that provides a variety of materials for building, fuel and office supplies.
Trees beautify our environment, provide shade on a sunny day and improve our quality of life. National Arbor Day celebrates all these things and aims for American generations to come to enjoy all the benefits trees have to offer.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Celebrate National Arbor Day by planting a tree today and share it using #NationalArborDay on Social Media.
HISTORY
On April 10, 1872, journalist and newspaper editor J.Sterling Morton established Arbor Day in the state of Nebraska with hopes that it would spread across the country. This first Arbor Day challenged the people of Nebraska who were pioneers and missed the trees and forests of the east.
The challenge was to plant as many trees as they possibly could. The citizens of Nebraska answered the challenge by planting more than 1 million trees that first Arbor Day.

National Peace Rose Day - April 29

NATIONAL PEACE ROSE DAY

Each year on April 29th we recognize National Peace Rose Day.   The day is set aside to honor the “Peace” rose, a well-known and fruitful garden rose.
The light yellow to large cream-colored flowers of the Peace rose have slightly flushed crimson pink petal edges.  It is a hybrid tea rose that is hardy, vigorous and highly resistant to disease.
French horticulturist Francis Meilland, developed the Peace rose between 1935 and 1939.  When Meilland foresaw the German invasion of France, to protect the new rose, he sent cutting to his friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany and the United States. It is believed these cuttings were sent to the United States on the last plane available before the German invasion.
The rose received different names in each country it was sent.  In France, it was called “Madame A. Meilland” in honor of the breeder’s mother.  In Italy, it was called Gioia, meaning Joy.  In Germany, the name of the rose was Gloria Dei, for glory to God. In the United States, the rose was named Peace.

National Zipper Day - April 29

NATIONAL ZIPPER DAY

National Zipper Day is observed each year on April 29th.  This day celebrates something that we often do not think about and just automatically take for granted.
It was first in 1851 that Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine, received a patent for an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure”. Howe never made an attempt to market his invention and missed the recognition he may have received.
Forty-two years later, Whitcomb Judson began selling the “Clasp Locker”. Being very similar to Elias Howe’s patent, this device served as a more complicated hook-and-eye shoe fastener.  Judson started the Universal Fastener Company where he manufactured his new device and debuted it at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 but was met with little success.  Because Judson put his invention before the public for sale, he earned credit as its creator.
In 1906, Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American electrical engineer, was hired to work Universal Fastener Company.  He was highly skilled and known for his devotion to the company.  In 1913, he invented the modern zipper. The patent for the “Separable Fastener” was issued in 1917.
By 1923, B.F. Goodrich popularized the word zipper as it applied to use in the boots and pouches it made.  The company even copyrighted the name for a time.
