Did you know?

Originally from England, Alfred Piddington emigrated to Canada in 1854 where he was a binder and bookseller, and later owned one of the largest book establishments in Toronto. Drawn to Southern California due to poor health, he arrived in Ontario in 1883. Piddington purchased 31 acres where he planted vines and fruit trees. He donated his private library and volunteered to serve as Ontario’s first... librarian in 1885 when our library was established by the community. He resigned in 1886 stating that the library, located at the Holt Adobe on Euclid and A Street (Holt Avenue), was too far from his home on Euclid and I Street. However, he returned in 1888 and stayed through 1892 serving as librarian on a voluntary basis.
