Everyone has different preferences when it comes to transportation. Unfortunately, bicyclists and pedestrians are one of the few groups of road users to experience an increase in fatalities in the United States over the last few years. We are working hard to raise awareness of the dangers to bicyclists and pedestrians to combat these crashes. We urge all drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to drive, ride, and walk safely. Avoid distractions, follow the rules of the road, and wear proper safety equipment.
Here are some safety tips for all:
- Sidewalks were designed for pedestrians.
- Cross the road by walking your bicycle in the crosswalk just like a pedestrian.
- If there is no crosswalk, cross at a corner.
- Bicycles in the roadway are considered vehicles.
- Bicyclists should bicycle in the same direction as other vehicle traffic and follow the same rules.
- If you bicycle on the sidewalk, slow and give pedestrians the right of way.
- Stop before crossing the street from a sidewalk to give motorists time to see you.
- Make sure turning motorists see you by making eye contact.
- Wear bright clothing and maintain proper bicycle lighting.
- Don’t walk or ride in the street while distracted with phones and radios.
