A rotating outage is a temporary and controlled electric outage called by the California Independent System Operator and conducted under utility control. The utility manages and rotates the outages to protect the integrity of the overall power grid.
It is called a “rotating outage” because the outage rotates through groups of customers — for approximately an hour at a time — so that customers are generally not without power for more than an hour.
