Moving west from Iowa, Ezra Ritner Alter and his wife Mabel made Ontario their home in 1904. This pioneer was a citrus grower who also served Ontario as park commissioner, credited with planting the first lawn on Euclid Avenue. Alter served as a member of Ontario City Council from 1916 to 1923, and was appointed mayor by fellow council members in 1916, serving two years, completing the term of May...or Frank C. Crowell who died suddenly while in office. Ezra Alter was grandfather to Hobie Alter, Ontario native and world famous surf and sailing pioneer, designer of surfboards and creator of the Hobie Cat catamaran.
