Paper clay handles differently from other clays. Students will spend the two hours before lunch (10:00 – 12:00) exploring what is possible. Michelle will do a demo and show samples. Students will practice new techniques such as stretching, compressing and controlled tearing. Just before lunch, everyone will do the main supporting piece for a seated figure and set it aside to dry.
After lunch students will use their new techniques to create other components for their sculpture. They will then will start the assembly process, working from the base that was started before lunch. By the end of the day, the students will be able to take their unfired piece home or pay an extra firing fee to have their piece fired at The Ceramics Studio. Michelle will provide recipes for the stains and oxides that she uses and discuss surface treatments.
