Central School was Ontario’s first grammar school. It opened in 1887 and its first building was in use until 1912. A new Central School opened in 1913. Until 1921, Central School taught through the eighth grade. In addition to academic courses, older students also took courses in practical subjects such as Domestic Science, seen here from 1918, where cooking was taught. Central School’s third and ...current building was constructed at G Street and Sultana Avenue in 1935 at a cost of a little over $87,000.00. Half of the money used to build the school were provided through Works Progress Administration funds as an unemployment relief measure. The new building included a full size auditorium and a basement cafeteria and was built to the Field Act earthquake codes that were enacted in 1933 just one month after the Long Beach earthquake. Central School closed to students in 1978 due to declining enrollment, but after three decades as a district schoolbook repository, it reopened in 2008 as a new magnet school, the Central Language Academy.
