At least one person was seriously injured today in a two- vehicle rollover crash on a Pomona street in which the car that apparently caused the accident was involved in an earlier non-injury hit-and-run collision, according to police.
The crash involving a BMW took place at 7:09 a.m. at the intersection of Garey and Pearl avenues, according to Pomona police Sgt. Brian Hagerty.
According to the police report, the BMW was heading west on Pearl Avenue at a high rate of speed when the female driver ran a stop sign and collided with another car driven by a 23-year-old man from Corona, according to Hagerty. After the crash, the BMW rolled over and slammed into a utility pole.
The BMW driver was temporarily trapped inside the wreckage of her car, Hagerty said. After paramedics freed her, she was airlifted to County-USC Medical Center in very serious condition. There was no information available regarding the condition of the second driver.
During the investigation officers determined that the BMW had been involved in a non-injury hit-and-run collision that occurred a few minutes earlier at near the intersection of Palomarea and Pearl Avenue, according to Hagerty. In that case the woman driving the BMW allegedly hit a parked car and fled the scene.
Pomona police Lt. Chuck Becker told City News Service the investigation was ongoing and his latest information was the woman who drove the BMW remains in critical condition and will be hospitalized for an extended period of time.
"If any criminal charges are filed against her, that will be the decision of the District Attorney's Office," Becker said. "But any potential prosecution would have to wait until she's released from the hospital."
