Wow’ser on reports of retirement by Houser
Huell Howser interviews
park interpreter Shelley Kibby and Sherry Stange, an artist from Hemet, at the
Nature Center at Lemon Lily Festival in Idyllwild. (06/21/2011) Submitted to The
Press-
Reports leaked Wednesday that “California’s Gold” host Huell Howser is
retiring.
As one who has long followed this Palm Springs area TV celeb to learn all about the off-the-main-path and historic nuggets he has found as he’s traversed this massive state, I was particularly sad by the news first reported by the LA Times and the Sac Bee.
I’ve watched Howser trek to the Coast, and tromp around eclectic restaurants I might otherwise have driven by. I’ve seen him turn things we sometimes take for granted – like stops along Route 66 – spring to life. I’ve marveled at his courage to climb up into and peer out of the gearbox of a wind turbine that towers over craggy terrain.
Weeks ago, Howser did a fabulous spot on a straw house in Southern California that I’m pining to see.
Howser’s gentle spirit and ambling ways – the drawling, “We-elle, isn’t tha’at something’’ approach -- with a wide cross-section of California folks -- has long captivated me.
News of his pending retirement made the Real Estate Notebook cut because of all Howser’s done to help people living outside California, visitors and émigrés, understand just how dynamic, diverse and beautiful every region in this state can be.
His shows can be viewed on KCET, and at various times on California PBS stations statewide and in states that include Oregon, Nevada and Tennessee.
Howser embodies the upbeat, pioneering spirit of California – a state built on brawn, hard work, individualism and wanderlust.
