The dA Center for the Arts is proud to present Artisans of Musical Design on exhibit January 12 through January 26, 2013. Curated by Martin Maudal and Michael Kotzen, Artisans of Musical Design, brings together the work of local musicians who craft their own instruments. The dA will host its opening reception on January 12, 2013, from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Now in its second year, Artisans of Musical Design brings together the work of local artisans that are dedicated to creating quality instruments. In addition to the works of curators Martin Maudal and Michael Kotzen, this exhibition will display the works of Kirk Delman, Jason Farthing, J.T. Whitney, Larry Porgreba, Simon Hill, Richard Barnes, and Steve Goode. Highlighted within the exhibition will be a selection of interactive drums for visitors and guests to use and to have a hands-on sound experience. The opening reception will include scheduled musical performances by J.T. Whitney, The Penny Drops, and the Budrows beginning at 5:00 pm. Additionally, all of the participating craftsmen have been invited to perform informal solo and collaborative sets to showcase the instruments’ sounds throughout the night.
This exhibition displays both traditional and non-traditional varieties of instruments including guitars, drums, cajons, didgeridoos, stringed instruments, and sound sculptures. Individually each artist allows the viewer to appreciate their individual style. Collectively they demonstrate the immense skill and knowledge involved in handcrafting each individual work as well, as the trends that flow throughout the local community of instrument crafting. Artisans of Musical Design is sponsored by Styles Music.
