Businesses Cited for Selling, Tobacco, Alcohol and Lotto to Minors
Three people were arrested April 5 during a minor decoy operation that Claremont Police and a number of cooperating law-enforcement agencies undertook.
The operation allowed officials to check if stores were selling tobacco, alcohol and even lottery tickets to minors.
Claremont Police Department, which issued the update, said the operation was developed as one of the largest Multi-Agency enforcement operations in Southern California. Officers sent a decoy minor into businesses to purchase items that would require employees to ask for identification to make sure they were complying with the law.
Seven of 208 locations checked were in Claremont. Wine & Liquor Market, 750 S. Indian Hill Blvd., was cited for a violation. An employee, Shahin Dahi, was also arrested and issued a citation for the violation, Claremont Police officials said.
Twenty other locations were found to be in violation of selling alcohol to a minor, two businesses were found to be in violation of selling tobacco products to a minor and seven locations were in violation of selling lottery products to a minor, officials said.
All those arrested were released on a notice to appear citation, officials said.
The penalty for sales of alcohol, tobacco, or lottery products to a minor is a minimum $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service. ABC, State Lottery, and Board of Equalization can also take administrative action against the businesses’ licensee.
Participating agencies included Redlands, Chino, Riverside, UC Riverside, Pomona, Rialto, Fontana, Ontario, Hemet and Indio police departments and the San Bernardino County Probation Office, State Lottery and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
