NEWEST SENATOR: Norma Torres sworn in to office

SACRAMENTO -- Former Assemblywoman Norma Torres was sworn into the state Senate following her victory in last week’s special election in Inland Southern California’s 32nd Senate District.
Torres, D-Pomona, will serve out the unexpired term of former state Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod, D-Chino, who was elected to Congress in November. Her term expires next year.
Torres defeated Ontario Mayor Paul Leon, a Republican, in last Tuesday’s election 59.6 percent to 40.4 percent. Torres and Leon finished atop a six-person field in the March 12 special primary in the Pomona-to-San Bernardino district.
Family members joined Torres for Monday’s swearing-in ceremony. Her arrival increases Democrats’ ranks in the upper house to 28.
