Reminder: Major 60 Freeway Closures Start Tonight

Motorists are warned to expect delays and are urged to use alternate routes.
The start of what the California Department of Transportation has dubbed the "Summer Slam" of the 60 Freeway gets underway tonight.

Caltrans plans four 55-hour weekend lane closures on State Route 60 between Fullerton Road and Nogales Street as part of a $121.5 million pavement rehabilitation projects, according to a news release.  On- and off-ramps and the 57/60 freeway connector will be affected, officials said. The first closures start tonight at 10 p.m.
At a media briefing this week, Caltrans District 7 Director Michael Miles urged residents to be prepared for delays.
“This type of work helps Caltrans avoid future emergency lane closures that would further inconvenience motorists," he said. "Motorists should plan ahead, leave early, seek alternate routes, explore transit options, and limit driving in the area as much as possible.”
Other officials who attended the briefing included 57th District Assemblyman Ian Calderon, Walnut City Councilwoman Mary Su, and California Highway Patrol Capt. Daniel Minor.
Although these are not all full freeway closures, Caltrans is warning motorists to expect delays and urging them to use alternate routes and public transit when possible.
Drivers can also check traffic conditions before leaving by calling 511 or visiting the Caltrans Quickmap at quickmap.dot.ca.gov.

Full Freeway Closures
Each of the four 55-hour weekend closures will include a full closure in the same direction as that weekend's lane closures from Saturday 1 a.m. to Saturday 5.a.m. and from Monday at 1 a.m. to Monday 5 a.m. for concrete barrier installation and removal, officials said.
The pavement rehabilitation project in its entirety is expected to be completed by fall 2014. Besides pavement work, the project includes the installation of traffic loops and lane striping.
"The Pomona Freeway (SR-60) is a major thoroughfare, serving commuters between Los Angeles and San Bernardino and Riverside counties," officials said in a statement. " As a result of heavy use, the road has experienced extensive wear. SR-60 is being rehabilitated in both directions between the San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605) and Orange Freeway (SR-57)."
