What an APD License Plate Reader Looks Like Up Close

Since 2008, Arcadia police officers haven't had to scrawl down license plate numbers to run them through the system. Instead, a hood mounted camera takes care of that.

The automated license plate reader systems have assisted in the department in finding stolen vehicles and recovering vehicles with excessive parking tickets, according to APD's news blog.
"Simply speaking, cameras on the police unit read license plates on vehicles and then compare the plates read to those listed on a computer database," the blog explains. "The vehicle and plate are also photographed. If there is a “hit” on the plate, such as a felony want or stolen vehicle, the PIPS system alerts the Officer who can then take action."
