The ordinance would prohibit the activity at shopping areas, outdoor dining areas, public events and nature trails.
As the La Cañada Flintridge City Council waits for the Aug. 5 meeting that could determine whether proposed smoking restrictions will be passed, residents have shared with Patch their concern or delight over this possibility.
The proposed ordinance includes banning smoking at the following locations:
- Common areas of shopping centers (with an allowance for designated smoking areas)
- Outdoor dining areas
- Public events
- City-owned and city-controlled properties, including city parks and trails
The La Cañada Flintridge Youth Council originally recommended the ordinance.
“I’m really happy they’re thinking about doing this,” Lenora Blackwelder said. “I used to smoke and have stopped for years; it affects my lungs and I know it’s hard to withdraw from it but it is an ugly habit.”
