Claremont Mourns Passing of Former Mayor Algird 'Al' Leiga


Former mayor and councilman Algird Leiga died last week. A memorial has been scheduled.

Claremont is mourning the loss of former mayor and councilman Algird "Al" Leiga who died recently.
The former councilman died Aug. 2 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, according to a report by the Claremont Courier.

Mr. Leiga had been serving as 1st Vice-Chair of the Los Angeles County Quality and Productivity Commission.
He had a varied background in science, business and local government, according to a bio on the county’s web page.

Mr. Leiga attended New York University where he received a BA, MS and PhD in physical chemistry. He is retired from Xerox Corporation where he worked for 31 years. At Xerox his assignments included fundamental physics and chemistry research, management of technology, corporate staff for materials science and production plant management.
Algird Leiga served on the Claremont city council from 1990 to 2003 and was Mayor from 1994 to 1997. He has been an active participant in developing improved public transit as an executive board member of Foothill Transit and as a founding Board member of the Gold Line Construction Authority.
In addition, he has served as Trustee of the San Gabriel Valley Vector & Mosquito Control District and as a member of the Crime Prevention and Public Safety steering committee of the National League of Cities.
He is currently an active member of the Rotary Club of Claremont.
“All City facilities will have their flags flown at half staff this week in honor of Al’s passing,” Bevin Handle wrote in an email response to Claremont-La Verne Patch.
A memorial is planned on Thursday at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, she wrote. Check the Claremont Courier for time and address.
