Soccer Debuts at Dodger Stadium

The games will be the "first of many, many more," Dodger president and CEO Stan Kasten says.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first goal and assisted on the second later in the first half as Real Madrid defeated Everton, 2-1, as soccer made its debut at Dodger Stadium Saturday.
Ronaldo scored in the 17th minute off Mesut Ozil's assist and assisted on Ozil's goal 14 minutes later in the opening game of a doubleheader of the eight-team Guinness International Champions Cup. Ronaldo was named the 2008 World Player of the Year by FIFA, soccer's international governing body.

Substitute Nikica Jelavic scored off Steven Naismith's assist in the 61st minute for Everton, which finished sixth in England's Barclays Premier League in the 2012-13 season. Real Madrid was the runner-up in Spain's La Liga in the 2012-13 season.
Real Madrid led 16-7 in shots and 6-2 in shots on goal. Everton's New Jersey-born goalkeeper Tim Howard made four saves, all in the first half. Diego Lopez, who entered the game at the start of the second half made Real Madrid's only save. Iker Casillas, the captain of the Spanish team that won the 2010 World Cup, did not make a save in the first half.

In a game where the usual three-substitute limit was waived in favor of unlimited substitutions, Real Madrid made six substitutions to start the second half and Everton one. Ronaldo left the game in the 60th minute of the 90-minute game.
An attendance figure was not announced.
The approximately 100-yard by 70-yard field was laid out along the first base and right field foul line, with one goal in what would be foul territory behind third base and the other in slightly in front of the right field fence. Grass covered the infield and the pitching mound was removed.
The two-time defending Major League Soccer champion Los Angeles Galaxy faced Juventus, the champion of Italy's Serie A the past two seasons, in the second game.
"It was impressed with the facility," said Howard, who described the atmosphere as electric. "I was excited to come play in Dodger Stadium. It's an iconic venue for sports in America."
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti called the game "a little strange because we didn't play in a football stadium."
Real Madrid began play in the tournament Thursday, defeating the Galaxy, 3-1, at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., the home field for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
The  soccer games will be the "first of many, many more" at Dodger Stadium, Dodger president and CEO Stan Kasten said in May when the doubleheader was announced.
"As soon as we heard about the possibility, we jumped right in cause this was such an exciting opportunity for city of Los Angeles and the Dodgers to host this kind of event," Kasten said.
The victory was the second in two tournament games for Real Madrid, which advanced to the championship game, which will be played Wednesday at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
