One of the latest entrants into the already crowded 2015 contest to succeed Los Angeles Councilman Tom LaBonge won early endorsements today from top state politicians.
Steve Veres, a trustee on the Los Angeles Community College Board, is in the midst of fundraising for a bid to fill the 4th District Council seat, which represents such neighborhoods as Hollywood, Los Feliz, Toluca Lake and Sherman Oaks, as well as iconic destinations such as Griffith Park.
Veres received nods from state Sen. Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles and Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles. Both have parts of their districts overlapping the 4th District.
Former State Assembly Majority Leader Dario Frommer also threw his support behind Veres, according to a release.
Veres said he drew encouragement from the show of support, calling the current and former state legislators his "role models."
The official period for declaring candidacy is still about 13 months away, and the election itself does not take place until March 2015, but prospective candidates have wasted no time to begun fundraising, especially for LaBonge's seat, which he will have held for 14 years at the end of his term.
Four other candidates, including two City Hall chiefs of staff and a former mayoral aide, have also signaled their intentions to run for the 4th District by filing fundraising papers with the city Ethics Commission this month.
Compared with the 4th District, candidates have trickled in at a slower pace for the South Los Angeles 8th District race to succeed Councilman Bernard Parks, with two filing papers with the Ethics Commission earlier this month.
