A big “Happy Birthday” is in order for the Hollywood sign that turns 90 today. The Los Angeles sign, with its nine letters each 45 feet tall, got a kind of facial last year with 110 gallons of primer and 275 gallons of fresh paint. It once said Hollywood Lane up on that hill. By 1978, termites had attacked and caused its decay, and an unlikely hero, Hugh Hefner, saved the day. He auctioned off L-A-N-D to raise money and repair the iconic sign.
