Man Identified in Deadly Mountain Crash Near Claremont
A man killed when his vehicle went 150 feet over the side of Mt. Baldy Road near Claremont was identified Thursday as a Pico Rivera resident.
The crash occurred in the area of Shinn Road near the Los Angeles-San Bernardino county line and was reported just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol. No other victims were found.
The man was identified by the coroner's office as Dennis Sandoval, 60, of Pico Rivera. The circumstances of the crash were under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
"For unknown reasons, [the driver] allowed [his Toyota] to veer to the left until [it] left the roadway," CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez reported. "[The vehicle] proceeded to collide with a three foot concrete retaining wall and a metal light pole."
After hitting both the wall and pole, the vehicle continued "out of control" and down the mountainside embankment before eventually coming to a rest at the bottom, according to Jimenez.
Sandoval was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said.
