Unemployment Rate in L.A. County Climbs to 10.1 Percent
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County increased to 10.1 percent in August, up from a revised 9.9 percent in July, the state Employment Development Department announced today.
The 10.1 percent unemployment rate was below the 10.9 percent rate in August 2012, according to the EDD.
The current unemployment rate for Baldwin Park is 12.8 percent, well below the county rate.
In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the unemployment rate was 6.2 percent, down from 6.5 percent in July.
California's jobless rate was 8.9 percent in August, up from 8.7 percent in July but down from 10.4 percent in August 2012, according to the EDD.
The comparable estimates for the nation were 7.3 percent in August, 7.4 percent in July and 8.1 percent a year ago.
Total nonfarm employment increased by 6,500 jobs in Los Angeles County between July and August to reach nearly 3.9 million. The educational and health services sector saw the largest jump, adding 3,500 jobs, according to the EDD.
A total of 501,000 people were unemployed in August in Los Angeles County, which has a labor force of nearly 5 million.
