A man suspected in the hit-and-run death of a 48-year-old man who was walking on Ventura Boulevard in Encino was free on bail Tuesday.
The victim was walking in eastbound lanes of Ventura Boulevard near Gaviota Avenue around 12:15 a.m. Monday when he was struck by a large black SUV, according to police. He died at the scene.
After a daylong search by police, 26-year-old Woodland Hills resident Grant James Valentine walked into the offices of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division with his attorney and surrendered, according to Officer Cleon Joseph. He was placed under arrest and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, Joseph said.
Valentine had been held at the Van Nuys Station jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, but posted bail late Monday and was due in court in Van Nuys on Oct. 28, according to sheriff's online booking records.
