The Penley Letters
In addition to Mr. Ono’s presentation, students from Pomona Unified School District will be presenting selected readings from the Penley Letters.
Lavina Penley was a school librarian at Emerson School (then through 10th grade) and befriended the Japanese students then living in Pomona. When they were moved to the Assembly Center at the Pomona Fairgrounds, she visited them and began a correspondence with them. Pomona Library’s Special Collection has the letters sent by those students to Mrs. Penley, and selections of them will be read. After leaving the Fairgrounds Assembly Center, most of the internees ended up at the Internment Camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming (near Cody).
